‘Kozo’ is Japanese for paper made from the mulberry tree. This paper has a slightly off-white creamy colour and has not been processed too much, so it still has flecks of bark visible in the paper.
This handmade paper light, or chōchin, was handmade in the Fushitani workshop in Nagoya city in the heart of Japan.
Initially chōchin were used at temples and shrines. Later they were developed as collapsible lanterns for the military, then pilgrims and other travellers began using them. Subsequently, larger lanterns were developed for shops and as paper became
cheaper, chōchin were used for domestic lighting.
